How it works
Running a household is work with a market price attached to every part of it. Someone will cook, clean, drive, mind the children, and keep the paperwork straight, and if nobody in the house does it, you hire it out.
This calculator uses that fact directly. It prices each task at the going local rate for hiring it, multiplies by the hours the task actually takes, and adds a year together.
Economists call this a replacement-cost valuation:
- hours — the hours a task takes in a typical week
- rate — the local market price per hour to hire that task out
- Σ — the sum of hours × rate across every task on the list
- 52 — weeks in a year, because none of this stops for a season
With the defaults, 40 hours of childcare at $18 an hour, 14 hours of cooking at $16, 12 hours of cleaning at $17, 6 hours of driving at $20, and 8 hours of admin at $22 come to $1,444 a week. Across 52 weeks that is an annual salary equivalent of $75,088, built from 80 hours a week of work.

A worked example: 80 hours a week, priced at local rates
Say a typical week runs 40 hours of childcare, 14 of cooking and meal prep, 12 of cleaning and laundry, 6 of driving, and 8 of admin, scheduling, and finances. Price each at what your area charges to hire it out: $18, $16, $17, $20, and $22 an hour.
The week comes to $1,444, and across 52 weeks the annual salary equivalent is $75,088.
The breakdown shows where the value sits. Childcare alone accounts for $37,440, about half the total, because it takes the most hours.
Cooking adds $11,648, cleaning $10,608, admin $9,152, and driving $6,240. The hours total 80 a week, twice a full-time job, which is what an honest tally produces once overlapping tasks are each counted.
Nothing is netted out, so read it as what the work would cost to buy, not a paycheck.
One input moves the result more than any other. Drop childcare from 40 hours to 20, roughly what happens once children are in school all day, and the total falls to $56,368, or $1,084 a week across 60 hours.

What this number measures, and what it does not
The figure is a replacement cost. It answers exactly one question: at going local rates, what would it cost to buy the work that currently gets done for free?
That is a legitimate, well-established way to value labor, and it is close to the logic an insurer or a court would apply. It is not a paycheck.
No employer writes it, no tax is withheld from it, and no money changes hands. The household simply consumes the work rather than purchasing it.
It is also deliberately gross rather than net. The calculator does not subtract anything: not the cost of housing and feeding the person doing the work, not the share of cooking and cleaning that any adult would do for themselves anyway, and not the care a working parent would still pay for on evenings and weekends.
Those adjustments are all defensible, and every one of them answers a different question than this page does. This one prices the work at market rates and stops there.

Why the hours run past a full-time week
At the defaults the hours total 80 a week, two full-time jobs’ worth, and that is not an arithmetic error. It is what an honest tally produces, for two reasons worth being clear about.
The first is overlap. A job bills one hour at a time.
A household does not. You supervise a toddler while the laundry runs and dinner simmers, and all three hours land in the total even though only sixty minutes passed on the clock.
This is the honest limitation of the method: the raw sum overstates what a literal hire-out would cost, because an agency sending one person to do all three jobs at once bills for one person, not three. Anyone using this number should say so out loud rather than pretend the sum is a quote.
The second is that there is no clocking out. Much of the childcare figure is time you are technically off duty and still responsible, which is why the default sits at 40 rather than the 168 hours a week a child exists for.
Read the total as an accounting of work performed, not hours billable.
Three things the number is genuinely good for
A valuation nobody will ever pay still earns its keep. Three uses, roughly in order of how practical they are.
- Sizing life insurance on a non-earning spouse. This is the most concrete use by far. If the person doing this work died tomorrow, the survivor would have to buy back a large share of it at market rates, and cut their own paid hours to cover the rest. A household with no income to replace still faces an enormous new expense, and this figure is a reasonable starting point for a policy amount. Insurers do write coverage on a non-earning spouse, and this is the argument you make for it.
- Household negotiations. Unpaid work is easy to miss precisely because no invoice ever arrives for it. A number on a page makes it visible and gives two people something concrete to divide rather than a vague sense of who is doing more.
- Seeing what the household actually consumes. A family running on this arrangement receives tens of thousands of dollars of services a year at no cash cost. That never shows up in a budget, and knowing its scale changes how you read the budget you do have.
Common questions
Why does the weekly total come to more than 40 hours?
Because household tasks overlap in ways a job never would. Minding a child, running laundry, and cooking can all happen in the same hour, and each is counted.
The total measures work performed rather than hours on a clock, which is why it commonly lands past 60 or 80.
Is this a salary I could actually be paid or claim?
No. It is an estimate of what the work would cost to buy, not income anyone will hand you. There is no employer, no paycheck, and nothing to report.
The value is in seeing the size of the work, not in collecting it.
Why does the calculator not subtract taxes or expenses?
Because netting things out answers a different question. The moment you start deducting, you are no longer pricing the work, you are running a household budget.
This page keeps to the market value of the labor and leaves the deductions to a tool built for them.
What hourly rates should I put in?
Whatever it would genuinely cost to hire the task out where you live. Look at what a local nanny, cleaner, or meal service charges.
Rates swing hard between a small town and a big city, and the admin rate is the one most people set too low, since scheduling and money management are skilled work.
Does the overlap problem mean the number is wrong?
It means the number is a ceiling rather than a quote. You could not hand this figure to an agency and receive an identical household in return, because they would send fewer people doing more at once.
As a measure of how much work is happening, though, it holds up fine.
Does this apply to a stay-at-home dad, or any parent?
Yes. Nothing in the math has an opinion about who is doing the work.
The tasks and the rates are the same whoever fills in the hours, which is why the page is written in the second person throughout.
